James Rhein, 48, of Middletown, New York, demolished the house his wife, Diane Andryshak, owned, without telling her on Monday morning.

Andryshak said the two did not have any marital problems leading up to the day of the impromptu demolition. Rhein reportedly wanted to apply for a demolition permit, but the government office was closed because it was Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Rhein then rented an excavator and tore down the house.

“None of my belongings were taken out. Everything was in the house. I’m in shock, still I’m in shock,” Andryshak told ABC station WABC.

Concerned neighbors called the police, and officers quickly alerted utilities companies to turn off the gas and electricity.

When police arrived at the scene, Rhein was seen dumping debris from the home into dumpsters.

Andryshak came home to an empty lot and was justifiably shocked to see what was left of her house.

Rhein said the foundation of the house was completely beyond repair, which was why he tore it down. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Rhein was charged with criminal mischief and released on $300 bail. He is due in court on January 30.
